In a meeting of Texas Christian University’s administration, faculty, and student representatives, a proposal was put forward to adjust the class start times. They are hoping to enhance student wellness and academic performance.
The initiative could result in the first classes beginning at 9 a.m. instead of 8 a.m. as early as the Fall of 2025.
Dr. Karen Bell Morgan, TCU’s Dean of Students spearheaded this proposal. She referenced studies showing that later start times can lead to better academic performance and mental health.
“Our goal is to create an environment that supports our students, not only academically but also personally,” Dr. Morgan said. “We believe a modest shift in start times could yield significant benefits.”
The Student Government Association (SGA) officers quickly endorsed the proposal. They are finally now ready to share the news with the rest of the student body.
“A 9 a.m. start would allow students to get a bit more rest. That extra hour could be especially helpful for freshmen adjustment to college life,” said SGA President Dominic Mendlik.
TCU’s administration is considering a program that would install the new schedule for selected departments. This would allow the university to gather data on the effectiveness of later start times before making any long-term changes.
This extra hour could be dedicated for all professors to have office hours. This makes it easier for students to ask questions or bring up concerns.
TCU’s Board of Trustees is set to vote on the program in January, with an official decision expected shortly afterward.
If approved, students can expect changes to the Fall 2025 schedule. The university will encourage feedback from students and faculty throughout the semester.
While the decision is still up in the air, the proposal marks a promising step toward supporting the health and success of TCU’s student body. It could make TCU one of the first universities to take a proactive approach to addressing student wellness through adjusted class times.
